The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas by John Boyne
This is a WW2 novel written from a point of view I have never seen before. In his innocence, nine year-old Bruno somehow expresses horrific historical facts to his shocked reader, whilst as a character being unaware of it. The reader follows Bruno’s journey from childhood innocence to knowledge he should never have had to cope with. We also come to know the pain and suffering of imprisoned children Bruno believed he was befriending. This is a powerful, sublimely expressed story that I can’t recommend highly enough.
