Ever wondered where this phrase comes from?

The die was/is cast

An irrevocable choice has been made. I always thought it was dye, as in you can’t wash it out. It’s die – as in a single dice. It is most commonly taken to originate with Julius Caesar crossing the Roubicon to begin a civil war in the Roman republic. It is likely he said, ‘Let the die be cast!’ as in ‘Let the game begin!’
