‘When someone is cruel or acts like a bully, you don’t stoop to their level. No, our motto is, when they go low, we go high.’ Michelle Obama
I love and respect Michelle Obama and this is great advice for the modern western world. But these words are irrelevant in areas of the world where women can’t have that freedom either in action or even in thought. Historically in the west, and even in some western countries now, as well as certain current cultures, misogynistic societies and generations of legitimisation keep their females silent through threats, abuse, misused religion and by directing thinking processes.
Michelle Obama does indicate her understanding of this aspect of female emancipation in the following quote:
‘I am an example of what is possible when girls from the very beginning of their lives are loved and nurtured by people around them. I was surrounded by extraordinary women in my life who taught me about quiet strength and dignity.’
