I first read this in my teens, then again with my daughter in her teens. It appeals to adolescents because seventeen year-old Holden Caulfield has been expelled from four privileged schools and regards his teachers as ‘phonies’. There have been longer study books written about this novel than the book itself, with much analysis and interpretation. To me it is the story of a disaffected youth struggling to find authenticity within himself as well as within others. I recommend it very highly to readers of all ages with this advice: relax and enjoy it.
